yum update fails

yum update fails

Postby iptell » Tue Feb 18, 2014 5:43 am

Hi,

I installed Osdial on my server, but I have problem with "yum clear all;yum update".
Updating stucks on
Code: Select all
Cleanup    : kexec-tools-2.0.0-258.el6.x86_64

I was waiting for few hours, but it didn't finish. After rebooting system doesn't start, there are some errors about kernel panic.
I tried to reinstall from CD, but it happens each time.

How to finish osdial installation/updating?

That does not look OSDial related but O/S or hardware related.
If it happened to me I would reinstall.

I did reinstall already 3 times... When I installed Osdial last time, about month ago, everything was ok.
Is there a way to exclude particular package from update list?

I'm building a new box and will let you know if I run into the same.
What hardware do you have?

OK, I've confirmed it completes the update for kexec and then stops:

Cleanup : kexec-tools-2.0.0-258.el6.x86_64 390/625

I've forwarded the information to OSDial techs. Once I've confirmed it to be fixed I'll post it here.

There are mixed results from different installs. Why some hangs and others don't, appears to be h/w specific.
Initial testing is indicating that a workaround could be accomplished by killing this hanging process:

/bin/bash --norc /sbin/mkdumprd -d -f /boot/initrd-2.6.32-358.6.2.el6.x86_64kdump.img 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6.x86_64

By opening up another console (with Crtl-F2) you can then login as root and get access to kill the above process.

ps afx|grep mkdumpr[d]

will list the Process ID in the first column. You should see the process you need to kill. Run:

kill <PID>

to kill the process. for example: kill 18213

mkdumprd creates a ramdrive which is used to recover from a kernel crash.

Can you list as much specifics as possible about your hardware so that we can try to figure out what's identical to other failing computers?
It is not an OSDial issue but some issue mkdumprd has when trying to build the temp RAM drive. Reboot the server once you complete the update. When it boots it will look for the ramdrive and if missing it will create it.

Of course if this is too technical I can't help you at this time other than suggesting talking with OSDial support, or wait for it to be figured out. As I indicate above the development servers used by OSDial do not run into this issue. However it did fail on a cheap Dell desktop computer.

Hi,
thank you for your advices, I will try it today and let you know.
It happens to me on IBM x3550 server, 2x Intel Xeon E5450 @ 3GHz, 16 GB RAM.
I also tried on VM Player on my desktop and there is no problem, so it is h/w specific indeed.

OK, killing mkdumprd did the job, cleaning finished and everything is working OK.
Thank you for help.

I was happy too fast...
Unfortunatelly, after this method of finishing update OSDial doesn't work... First strange thing is when I login to agent interface. Normally OSDial dials my SIP phone immediately when I login. On this installation it dials my phone after about 10 seconds. Then I can wait for calls forever... I checked in asterisk console - it doesn't make calls...

killing mkdumprd doesn't help...
I also tried to exclude "kexec-tools*" in /etc/yum.conf - than "yum clean all;yum update" finishes ok, but Osdial does not work properly. When agent logs in, he waits few seconds until Osdial dials his phone. Than everything is working very slowly...
Any ideas?

ok, I found soultion: instead of running
Code: Select all
yum clean all;yum update

run
Code: Select all
yum clean all;yum update -y kexec-tools;yum clean all;yum update -y

so - first update only kexec-tools, it gets completed successfully, than update all the rest.

Here's what I did that worked:

1. Clean install from ISO
2. yum update kexec-tools
3. reboot
4. yum update

Everything works without error. Essentially the same as iptell suggested. The cleanup on kexec-tools takes a few minutes even when run first. Killing mkdumprd leaves potential problems. Dialing, inbound, etc. are all fine.
